Star struck stories about beloved actors and actresses overdosing may be something that Los Angeles
drug rehab centers are “known” for, but the reality is that behind the scenes of the cameras and
spotlights there are secrets that are meant to be kept. Addiction is not a disease that only affects
Hollywood stars and homeless people. It is a demon that can cause pain and suffering in the lives of
even the most unexpected.

Addiction is most commonly linked with alcohol, cocaine, methamphetamine’s, PCP and heroin. Hidden
behind all of that is another demon which affects individuals from every demographic imaginable,
prescription medication. The Office of Applied Studies (OAS) has findings an influx of individuals with
addiction to pharmaceuticals or other types of medications that affect the central nervous system such
as pain relievers, anxiety medication such as Xanax, Valium and Clonazepam as well as medication used
to treat insomnia. Surprisingly, more than half of the emergency room visits for such addictions or
adverse reactions are from adults ages 65 or older.

Continuing on the path of surprise, OAS shows a combined data from 2004 through 2008 indicating
that there was an average of 178,423 visits per year for drug-related suicide attempts by individuals
ages 12 or older! Shockingly children at the age of 12 have access to substances which could kill them,
and annually estimated 709,000 children ages 12-14 get alcohol from their family or home! Where is
the justice in that? Those children are still learning how to interpret reality from pretend! They are
learning right from wrong and finding their place in this world and their growth is being stunned through
substances provided by the parents that are supposed to be protecting them.

Drug and alcohol addiction obviously has many faces so no one person is better than the next. Addiction
is a disease, just like diabetes or cancer and it cannot be taken lightly. However there is hope as
addiction is a disease that is manageable with the right mindset and support system. It does not matter
if you are 12 or 65; substance abuse is everywhere and does not favor any one demographic more than
others.

Finally, addiction commonly runs hand-in-hand with mental illness or dual diagnosis. Many times
individuals with depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or other non-treated behavioral patterns
lead to substance abuse as a form of self-medicating. Individuals with such disorders may not know they
suffer from a mental health related illness and believe that the drugs are what keep them stable. In fact
the drugs are only an additional barrier between the addiction and recovery. When individuals are seen
for treatment of substance abuse, they should also have a psychological evaluation to determine if the
substance abuse was caused by the mental illness or if the mental illness was caused by the substance
abuse.

There are options for men and women of all backgrounds and for children and elderly individuals as
well! Treatment, like addiction wears many faces thus it is important to find a rehabilitation center that
fits the individual’s needs. There are co-ed facilities and there are centers that provide drug rehab for
women or men only. No matter what shape or size you are, treatment is the first step to challenging the
disease of addiction!

Addiction is never a simple thing. Those who have never dealt with addiction on a regular or personal basis usually believe that substance abuse is simply due to a lack of willpower, or of the power of chemicals over the mind. While those two factors play a small role in drug addiction, most women have deep and varied reasons for dependency.

Women’s drug treatment centers are beginning to realize that treating addiction goes far beyond simply allowing they physical need for drug consumption to dissipate. In fact, for most women, physical dependence is the smallest hurdle they face. Dealing with deep trauma and emotional problems lies at the core of a successful drug treatment center. Luckily, there are options available for women. These will help them express and evaluate those emotional and psychological triggers, as well as develop a realistic treatment plan.

It is very difficult to determine if someone you know has a problem with drugs because many people secretly hide their drug use from their family and friends. Once the drug problem is discovered, it is important to get the individual the treatment they need at quality drug treatment centers.

There are many different types of drug treatment centers available to help individuals suffering from drug addiction. One of the most popular types of treatment centers are those that offer a dual diagnosis program. With this type of program, trained professionals will work with the patient to discover if they are suffering from any type of co-occurring medical or mental illness that could increase drug use. Patients will also be given spiritual guidance during the treatment to help motivate and keep the individual on track and toward lasting recovery.

There are many drug treatment centers in the United States. However, not all of these centers provide the same quality treatment. The challenge is in finding a center that is successful at treating individuals, and more importantly, keeping them off drugs for the long haul. One good way to determine if a program is working is to review the success rate of the program. What percentages of the participants have stayed off drugs? What has the center done to prevent its patients from relapsing and returning to drugs? One of the successful drug treatment centers, Harmony Place, has helped many women recover from drug addiction and remain drug-free. Their proven 28-day program includes a treatment plan that is personalized for individuals.

The American War on Drugs is, inarguably, as brutal and deadly as it was a decade ago. The good news is that in that same time, the number of drug treatment centers has exponentially exploded, offering any and all who seek treatment to find the best possible rehab recovery center for their particular situation. Women especially have welcomed a growth spurt in dual diagnosis rehabilitation centers, more importantly those geared specifically toward women seeking alcohol and drug rehabilitation and co-occurring disorders.
One of the most respected and lauded women only rehabs is Harmony Place Exclusively For Women, which Forbes lists as one of the top ten drug treatment centers in the world. Harmony Place, located in metropolitan Los Angeles, began as a co-ed dual diagnosis drug and alcohol treatment center in Malibu, California and, with success, expanded to offer a specialized program created for women only, in a different locale.
Upscale yet structured, individualized and comprehensive, safe and serene, the creators of Harmony Place recognized the need for a gender specific drug treatment center through their work with their Malibu rehab program. Building upon the foundation of seeking the cause of the drug and alcohol abuse, Harmony Place has created a women’s only drug treatment center which has become the model for many other programs. To learn more about their gender specific dual diagnosis program or drug treatment centers in general, visit their website at www.harmonyplace.net
