The willingness to get clean and sober is one of the first steps to recovery. Also crucial is the willingness to address all the traits that drive an individual to drink or use drugs. Understanding these “trigger points” are essential to achieving and maintaining sobriety. Getting to the origin of the using and abusing behaviors is often necessary for the client to understand. Understanding the circumstances and feelings, which are linked to drinking and/or drug abuse, will provide the pathway for the opportunity to learn new coping skills. Group Therapy is to provide clients with an ego-growth experience in a non-threatening and supportive environment where behavioral patterns and interpersonal relationships can be observed, assessed and modified through group techniques involving communication, education and relationship development. Understanding the circumstances and situations for which the client relates to triggering his/her substance abuse, will provide the client with the opportunity to learn new behaviors and “coping skills”.
